Bull Temple in Bangalore

Bull Temple or Nandi Temple or Basavanagudi Nandi Temple is situated in Basavanagudi, Bangalore. The Bull temple in Bangalore is exclusively for worship of the holy Bull in Hinduism, recognized as Nandi, the vehicle of Lord Shiva or animal mount. The meaning of word "Nandi" means "joyful" in the Sanskrit language.

The Bull temple in Bangalore was constructed in the year 1537 by a local ruler under the Vijayanagara empire. The temple is built in the Vijayanagara architectural style. Kempe Gowda, the founder of Bangalore, got the Bull temple constructed during his era. The existing tower (vimana) of the Bull temple was built in the early 20th century and is decorated by Salivate figures as well as motifs.

The Bull temple in Bangalore is named after the large granite Nandi monolith placed on the plinth in the temple shrine (garbhagriha). It is said to accommodate one of the largest Nandi statutes in the world. The height of the statue is around 15 ft (4.6 m) and this is approximately 20 feet (6.1 m) long. The statue of bull also features a small iron plate on its head. As per the tradition, this plate prevents the bull from growing. The Bull temple attracts people from far away as well as in the neighborhood of this temple of religious importance.

As per the mythology, the Bull Temple in Bangalore was constructed to calm down a bull that used to eat and wipe out all of the groundnuts as well as peanuts cultivated in this region. It is furthermore believed that as soon as the temple was constructed, the bull stopped destructing the crop. For this reason, the farmers of Basavanagudi planned a Kadalekai Parishe or Groundnut Fair, close to the temple. This Kadalekai Parishe is celebrated even today and this fair is witnessed by the Bangaloreans in greater numbers. The Kadalekai Parishe of Bull Temple is held in the month of November or December every year.
